SMD, GOB and COB LED display comparison

In GOB (Glue on Board), a transparent protective layer covers the LEDs. In SMD each LED is soldered to the board as its own package; in COB the LED chips sit directly on the board and are closed with a shared surface.

SMD and GOB

Both use SMD LEDs. On GOB the LED surface is covered with an extra transparent protective layer; that layer helps protect the surface from outside effects. In GOB (Glue on Board) a transparent protective layer covers the LEDs. That layer helps protect the LED surface against impact, moisture and dust.

Where GOB is considered

GOB options are considered where people can come close to the screen, touch it, or where traffic is heavy. Fit is confirmed together at survey, against the conditions of use. It is preferred where close viewing is needed and contact with the screen is a risk, such as meeting rooms, in-store areas and circulation spaces.

SMD and COB

In SMD each LED is soldered to the board as its own package; in COB the LED chips are placed directly on the board and closed with a shared surface. The COB surface is more resistant to impact; the suitable option is recommended per project.

Indoor, outdoor and GOB

COB / SMD indoor for control rooms and fine-pitch lobbies; IP65 outdoor for façades and DOOH; transparent or fine panel for retail shopfronts; rental cabinets for mobile events. Outdoor screens must survive rain, dust and sun. ARLEDSCREEN / NXTIONSTAR outdoor LED projects plan IP65 sealing, GOB protection and high nit output together. GOB surface armour adds impact and moisture resilience on NXTIONSTAR outdoor series.

What is the difference between GOB and a standard SMD screen?

Both use SMD LEDs. On GOB the LED surface is covered with an extra transparent protective layer; that layer helps protect the surface from outside effects.
